You have heard that TRE® "uses the body's natural tremor" and you want to know what that actually means, without mystical language or overstated science.
In short: the exercises gently tire the leg and hip muscles, after which a natural tremor can arise. Practitioners describe it as a way for the body to release muscular tension; research on how and whether that helps is still building.
The basic idea
TRE® typically uses about seven sequential exercises. They gently stretch and fatigue muscles in the legs and hips. Afterwards, often while lying down, a self-induced, non-pathological tremor may begin. The tremor is involuntary in the sense that you are not forcing the shake, but you remain able to slow or stop it by changing position.
TRE Global describes the practice as activating the body's natural ability to shake or tremor, a response that is often suppressed in daily life. That is the practitioner framing. It is not the same as a proven medical mechanism.
Why the legs often shake first
Because the exercises focus on the legs and hips, the tremor often starts there as a gentle vibration or rhythmic shaking. From there it may travel or change. Experiences vary widely. See also neurogenic tremors.
Does TRE® work on the psoas?
The exercises focus on the legs and hips, and David Berceli's writing discusses muscle patterns that include the psoas in the body's protective curling response. That is theory from the founder, not established fact. Claims that specific muscles "store" trauma are not established. For a careful look at that language, see trauma and the body.
Is TRE® scientifically proven?
No. Studies suggest possible benefits for stress-related outcomes, but study quality varies and more research is needed. A 2026 scoping review of 22 studies is the best current overview. See TRE® research.
This page does not teach the full exercise sequence. For a high-level look at the exercises, see TRE® exercises. To learn the practice safely, start with what is TRE®? or a guided session. These pages are wellness education and can sit alongside professional care, not replace it.
