You want a plain explanation of TRE®: what it is, what a session feels like, and whether it is a form of therapy. No jargon, and no overselling.
In short: TRE® is a set of simple exercises that invite a natural, involuntary shaking in the body. With guidance, you learn to let this tremor happen, pause it and stop it, as a way to work with stress and tension.
A clear definition
TRE® stands for Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises. It was developed by Dr David Berceli as a body-based practice. You do a short sequence of gentle exercises; afterwards, a tremor or shaking may arise on its own. You stay in charge: the practice teaches you to notice what is happening and to regulate the tremor rather than push through it.
TRE® is a self-help practice taught by trained providers. It is not psychotherapy and does not replace medical or psychological care.
What a first session can feel like
Sessions vary, but a private introduction often includes:
- a conversation about your needs and any cautions;
- gentle physical exercises to prepare the body;
- breathing and grounding;
- time for a natural tremor response, if it arises;
- learning how to begin, pause, slow down and stop;
- rest and a chance to talk about what you noticed.
After a few gentle exercises, many people feel a tremor begin in the legs. It can feel soothing, unusual or emotional. Some people feel very little at first. All of these are normal. You can stop at any time.
How many sessions do people need?
Many people learn the basics in a few sessions and then practise at home. Others prefer a longer programme with more support. Camille's offers range from a single one-hour introduction to a two-month programme. There is no required number of sessions, and no promised outcome.
See TRE® for beginners, how TRE® works and sessions with Camille. For the shaking side of the practice, see TRE® shaking.
These pages are wellness education. If you are living with trauma, panic or ongoing mental-health difficulties, please keep professional support in place and consider starting with a private session.
