You are exhausted, but your body will not power down. At night you feel tired and alert at the same time, scrolling or staring at the ceiling. That "wired but tired" feeling is common, and it has more than one possible cause.

In short: feeling wired but tired often means your body is still in stress mode even though your energy is depleted. Helping it come down gently, rather than pushing through, supports real rest.

What can keep you tired and alert

UCLA Health notes that occasionally feeling wired when you are tired can have an easy cause, such as caffeine too late or screens close to bedtime. If it is regular, it may be worth a closer look.

Contributors can include stress and worry, sleep deprivation, late caffeine, irregular sleep timing, late light and screens, anxiety, pain, medications and sleep disorders. Persistent exhaustion can also have medical causes such as thyroid problems or anaemia, so talk to a doctor if it continues.

Be wary of "adrenal fatigue" explanations. UCLA Health reports that there is no evidence the adrenal glands get fatigued by chronic stress in that way, and the Endocrine Society has warned that supplements marketed for adrenal fatigue can be unsafe. Feeling wired does not tell you what your cortisol level is.

An evening "come down" routine

  1. Screens off about 30 to 60 minutes before bed, if you can.
  2. Slow walk or sway for a few minutes to mark the end of the day.
  3. Long exhales for two to five minutes: breathe in gently, out longer.
  4. Legs up the wall or on a chair for a few minutes if that feels comfortable, then lie down.

The NHS suggests keeping a regular sleep pattern, making the bedroom dark, quiet and not too warm, and limiting caffeine and alcohol in the evening. Relaxation techniques may help you settle, but research on relaxation alone for chronic insomnia is limited; cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is generally the first-line recommendation. See somatic wind-down before bed and nervous system regulation for sleep.

What you might notice: a slightly heavier body, or a mind that still chatters. How to stop: open your eyes, wriggle your fingers and toes, breathe normally.

When to get help

If you have trouble sleeping for weeks, snore heavily, stop breathing in your sleep or feel very tired during the day, please speak with a doctor. If exhaustion is tied to work strain, see also burnout recovery. These practices are wellness education and can sit alongside professional care, not replace it.

Practise gently

These practices are gentle, but bodies respond differently. Go at your own pace, pause whenever you want to, and stop if anything feels too intense. If you live with a medical or mental-health condition, are pregnant, or are recovering from injury, check with a health professional first. This article is wellness education, not medical advice.
